Vindicated: Why geeks are the new jocks

I’ve always thought geeks are hot. They’re smart, have a passion and can hold a conversation – what’s not to like?

Then I started telling people around me that I thought geeks are hot. And they all gave me strange looks (well, most of them did). Some asked, “With the specs and all?”, and then tell me I’m odd for liking geeks.

Most confuse geeks with nerds, who are a whole different breed, people! Don’t believe me? See this venn diagram – it perfectly explains in succinct terms what the difference is.

A geek may be obsessed about computers, books, music or even plants – but because of this he is intelligent (at least in a certain field) and since everyone knows the sexiest part of the body is the brain, this is of course, extremely attractive.

So I hereby stand vindicated, everyone!

My friends fortunately, agree with me; so this post is for the rest of you who give me strange looks!

Here at Polkadot Monsters, we’re all slaves to technology and hence, a tad geeky.

None of us are parents yet, but for those of you who are, here’s how you can explain the birds and the bees to your angsty pre-teen / teenager in today’s world – use their language! What better than iPods, emblems of cool and sexy?

What do you get when you put two geeks with a sense of humour, a video camera and some nifty video editing software together?

Hilarity and brilliance in a YouTube link, of course!

To whet your appetite, check out this genius stop motion video involving more than 200 custom designed t-shirts and that took two days to film, all in the name of fun:

This made me smile after a long week at work, but the next video made me snort with laughter at the unearthly hour of 3am:

The jokers behind these videos are Rhett and Link, childhood friends and former engineers turned self-proclaimed “Internetainers”. They are also talented musicians, writing original comedy songs as well as being filmmakers and TV hosts.

They bring a very American brand of humour to the world – clever to the point of being inappropriate at times, but also about having fun and laughing at ourselves, both something that everyone always needs more of.

After all, life’s too short to be taken so seriously, don’t you agree?
